Conference Details

  • Dates: October 24-26, 2003 (see schedule below)
  • Location: Cavendish, Prince Edward Island (see directions)
  • Registration: $100.00 CDN per Person (approx. $75 US)
  • There is a maximum of 40 attendees, so reserve your spot by registering.

Accommodations & Meals

Your registration fee includes all meals (Friday dinner through Sunday brunch). Accommodations are not included in the registration.

The conference will be held at the Kindred Spirits Country Inn in Cavendish. Kindred Spirits has kindly offered a reduced rate of $75 CDN per night. Other arrangements can be made for families or other groups.

When you register, you can let us know that you’ll be needing accommodations and we’ll call you to make arrangements. If you have alternative accommodations, that’s great – though it would be nice to have most (or all) of us on site.

It is recommended that you stay on Friday and Saturday night. However, if you need to stay ealier or later due to travel arrangements, you can book for Thursday night and/or Sunday night, let us know.

Wireless internet will be provided (if the installation of broadband can be in place in time).

7PM - 8PM Dan James - silverorange - speaking about the history of silverorange, how the company works (they're owned by 6 shareholders, all of whom play an active role in the company), and some of the unique aspects of their business model.
8PM - 9PM Art Rhyno University of Windsor - Information landscapes & spaghetti code – a journey through libraries and the internet to the future architecture of web applications, the nature of information and the fabric of the universe.
Saturday, Oct. 25
8:30AM Optional (for early risers) - “Architect’s tour” of Avonlea village with Wil Lawrence
8:30AM - 10AM Breakfast (continental - provided)
10AM - 11AM Buzz Bruggeman - ActiveWords - speaking about his product, ActiveWords, and how he's used person-to-person marketing, blogs, and other stealth tactics to market it, as well as about working in a nomadic world.
11AM - 11:45AM Peter Rukavina - Reinvented Inc. - speaking about the "open source election" and "extreme user interface programming" -- war stories from using open source software to run the recent Provincial Election in PEI, lessons learned about users, technology, education, etc.
11:45AM - 12:30AM Steven Garrity - silverorange - speaking about weblogs, RSS, and related technologies, and how they are being, and could be, used in new and interesting ways.
12:30PM - 2PM Lunch (provided) & free time
2PM - 3PM Lisa Sloniowski and Mita Sen-Roy - University of Windsor - "the use of the Internet to reach beyond mainstream sources and to connect activist communities."
3PM - 4PM John Muir - Trent Radio - topic TBA.

4:30PM - 5PM Rob Patterson - Renewal Consulting - How will blogging change how we live? "This session will not be about the inside technical aspects of blogging but about how it might be used to change important parts of our lives. Blogging and Democracy; Blogging and the Media; Blogging and Education; Blogging and Health; Blogging and Business.MY bet is that blogging will change the relationships and the costs dramatically in these areas. I would like to discuss these issues with you"

7:30 PM - Ian Williams and Tessa Blake - Ian and Tessa will screen their film The Pink House, and then lead a discussion session about the film, and about filmmaking in general, film technology, film funding, and more.
Sunday, Oct. 26

10AM - 11AM Stephen Regoczei - Trent University - "How to Save the World, IMHO -- the blog version, because I am fed up with talking only to myself" - "My basic point is that the world has been saved many times in the recent past, for example from nuclear war, or from the full-scale 'limits-to-growth' scenario playing itself out, and it will have to be saved again now, or at the latest, tomorrow. The saving grace will be realizing how human being should be able to live like human beings: in comfort, surrounded by kindness, with mutual respect towards each other, building a better world. We are to create systems with caring and empathy as essential components. The design idea is central: if we are to build a better world, we should try to design it first. The design for a better world should be in the public domain, and should invite broad participation. Miracles happen overnight, just by people changing their minds; for example, that is how communism ended - people just simply changed their minds, and decided not to do the "communism-thing" any longer. This is where the Net comes in. There is no need to be a lone voice crying in the wilderness."
